Assam is expected to report a 75 per cent voter turnout in the first phase of elections for five Parliamentary constituencies which went to polls on Monday, a senior Election Commission has said.
“Till 5 p.m., when the elections closed, the percentage of electors who had cast their vote was at about 72.5 per cent. But still there were people waiting to vote so we expect the poll percentage to cross 75 per cent,” Alok Shukla, Deputy Election Commissioner, said. The total voter strength in the five Parliamentary constituencies is over 64.14 lakh and there are 51 candidates in the fray, officials said, adding the cash seizure was to the tune of ₹ 1.13 crore.
In Tripura where elections were held for one of the two Parliamentary constituencies, the voter turnout was 84 per cent, which is expected to go up by 1 or 2 per cent, as people were still waiting to vote even after the 5 p.m. deadline, officials said.
