The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday stated that it is examining the extradition request for former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi sending by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) before sending it to UK.

“ED has sent us an extradition request, will send to the UK side after examining it,” Vikas Swarup, spokesperson, MEA told reporters on Thursday.

Modi, who is accused in Rs 470 crore money laundering case, is believed to be living in London. This is based on a criminal case by the Board of Control for Cricket that was filed in 2010.

The ED has already sought a red corner notice against him from the Interpol.

Italian Marines Case

On the issue of Italian marine Salvatore Girone’s return to Italy, Swarup said the Italian government has given an undertaking that he will be under Supreme Court’s order and will be brought back as and when required.

Girone is one of two Italian sailors who killed two Kerala fishermen in 2012 as they were guarding an oil tanker and took the fishermen as pirates. He was already out on bail and was living at the Italian Embassy here.

The second sailor – Massimilano Lattore – had left India in 2014 for medical reasons.

Earlier this month, a UN arbitration court had asked India to release Girone although it stated that he has to abide by all the bail conditions set by the Supreme Court.
