The family of Delhi gang-rape victim said President Pranab Mukherjee should use his powers to ensure that the minor accused in the case gets the death sentence along with others accused for the heinous crime.
The brother of the 23-year-old victim told PTI over phone from Delhi that he had wanted to convey this request of the family to the President at the function in the national capital yesterday, where his sister was honoured with Rani Laxmi Bai Stree Shakti award, but failed to do so.
“The President has unparallelled powers and he can use them to ensure justice to my sister by seeing that the minor accused is hanged along with the others accused for the crime,” the brother of the girl said.
“The minor accused is not entitled to any leniency by taking refuge in laws concerning the age factor,” he said, adding that this case should be taken as an exception to send a strong message to law breakers.
He also criticised BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi and social activist and actor Rahul Bose for their comments on the case.
“The statement by Joshi that western thinking is responsible for the rising cases of rape is nothing but rubbish,” he said.
He termed as “unfortunate” Bose’s calling for a chance to the rape accused to reform themselves.
The paramedical student was brutally raped and assaulted by six persons in a moving bus in New Delhi on December 16 last year and she succumbed to injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29.

Absolutely right. We should consider his mental age and not physical age after taking into account that he fully knew what he was doing. In case he is spared then it will be a Mockery of the judicial system and laws of the Country. There will be Nation wide protests and the citizens will never accept that . He was the most brutal and deserves to be hanged first otherwise the soul of the Braveheart will haunt all those people responsible for the rest of their lives. Let us not let down the family of the Braveheart.
Justice be given to the family of the gang-raped girl who died because of the brutality of the criminal minded persons. The way she was assaulted and succumbed to death, all those responsible for that tragic incident must meet the same fate. All must be hanged, junior or senior , there should be no consideration of age. Strong message must be conveyed to the society. Violation of this nature must be with the strongest punishment of death.
The victims family is given special or unnecessary attention because of media hype. There are thousands of victims and their families suffering because of voilence cases in India . Many of them are unreported or ignored in due course of time .Ideally family of the victim should reject any such government favors(flat/job/cash) and should demand for only justice , also should desist from releasing public statements daily . It seems the family too is encashing her death. Frankly, Can anyone tell me why the victim is called braveheart/Nirbhaya etc and has been honoured by various political circles including US government ? Yes, Indeed she suffered a lot and met unfortunate fate after struggle for life ,but everyone in her position would go through it . Unfortunately millions of children meet the safe fate across the world. They all are victims. Period . She succeeded in attracting public attention against such brutlity because of media hype and public support instead of her efforts .
President Mukherjee: What people want to know is this: WHEN are you going to change the Juvenile Act? WHEN are you going to see that juveniles who commit vile, evil, heinous, sexual crimes against women and children must suffer an appropriate penalty? WHEN are you going to realize that juveniles who commit these savage, barbaric acts must be tried as ADULTS?? WHEN are you going to take your head out of the sand, Mr. President?? The mindset of these murdering, mutilating, barbaric, savage, violent rapists is EVIL!! These crimes demand harsh punishments if you are ever to stop them--which you are not doing! SHAME ON YOU, President Mukherjee!
To dontexaggerate: the victim's family is being given the attention they rightly deserve!! You're conveniently forgetting that the young Jyoti helped to SUPPORT her family, and that support was taken away upon her tragic death. Yes, other victims of violence should get the same treatment, and if you do your research, you will see that government has been giving 'consolation awards' to such families! Braveheart is called such because of her indomitable spirit and will to live through a most horrendous and heinous crime by six savage, barbaric beasts! Don't trivialize or minimize what she went through or COMPARE her to others! This is NOT about comparison! It was the crime that finally 'broke the camel's back' and finally galvanized a nation! And that is really something! Stop critisizing media hype and public support--her family deserve everything they can get after their terrible, terrible loss! Support them, don't criticize!
That there may be(or there ARE)other victims of similar serious crimes and those victims are not getting the same consideration as Jyoti's relatives are getting may all be quite true. But that in no way should affect the Jyoti case. All that the law can do is to PUNISH THOSE CRIMINALS THAT ARE CAUGHT. And, indeed, the law MUST DO THAT. The argument that the international trend is to call DEATH PENALTY babaric and then to agrue against it is an escapism. (Actually, if you open your inner eyes yo will see that is not the International trend.)
I for one, consider 13 days of TORTURE FOLLOWED BY PAINFUL DEATH as an appropriate punishment for all the SIX culprits (regardless of their age). If one is capable of committing that ADULT crime, he is capable of receiving the appropriate ADULT punishment. [Also, the evidence he has produced to prove his age is quite suspect.]
