A growing number of women are abandoning professional lives to become full-time mothers and raise children, according to a survey done by the Social Development Foundation of industry chamber, Assocham.
The foundation interacted with over 400 new mothers across 10 cities including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow and Mumbai in the age group of 25-30 years to know about their employment decisions post-motherhood. The survey was conducted during March-April this year.
One-fourth of the women who recently had their first child said they quit their job to raise kids. However, most of these mothers also said they planned to shift their focus back on career after their kids start going to school.
“However, many of those willing to pursue their careers again after a few years of motherhood, said they do not want to return to the same job due to fear of discrimination,” the survey added.
"In nuclear families married women have a tough time balancing work and childcare, especially if they do not get help from others," said D.S. Rawat, Secretary-General of Assocham said in a statement.
