A bandh called by the Left parties to protest the “injustice to Andhra Pradesh in the Union Budget” was supported by most of the Opposition, and in some places, even by the State’s ruling TDP.

The bandh affected normal life, but was peaceful.

The shutdown was called to protest the “neglect” shown to the State in Budget 2018-19, to demand that the Centre allocate funds for various projects in the State, and also honour promises and commitments made in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.

The bandh was supported by principal Opposition YSR Congress, the Congress, the Jana Sena Party and others. Even though the Telugu Desam Party did not openly support the bandh call, its leaders, including MLAs and ministers, staged demonstrations at various places in the State. Only its ally, the BJP, stayed away.

YSRC chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy participated in a demonstration in Nellore district to express his solidarity with the agitators.

The State government had declared a holiday for educational institutions in view of the bandh call. Buses of the AP State Road Transport Corporation buses did not ply. The bus depots were deserted. Banks did not function at many places. At some places, leaders of the left parties were taken into preventive custody. Cinema halls had cancelled morning shows and malls remained closed at most places.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was away in Dubai on Thursday to woo investors to the third CII Partnership Summit to be held here in the last week of the month.
