The Congress on Saturday defended Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, and said the BJP is trying to divert people’s attention from the Centre's failures on the ‘real’ issues such as unemployment, economic downslide, farm distress, demonetisation ‘disaster’ and a ‘repressive’ tax regime.

Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said persecution, vendetta and vilification of opposition leaders have become common under the current Narendra Modi government. “Tragically, CBI, ED and other investigating agencies have become the captive puppets in government's disgraceful mal-intent to oppress, hound and intimidate its opponents,” he said.

He said the “persecution and scurrilous witch hunt” of the family of Chidambaram in the Aircell-Maxis case have crossed all proportions. “Agencies deliberately widened the ambit and questioned Karti Chidambaram on 19.11.2014, but he categorically rejected the innuendoes and insinuations of knowledge or connection to Aircel-Maxis transaction. A charge sheet was then filed against Maxis and the Maran brothers. By order dated 02.02.2017, the Special Judge has quashed the charges and terminated the proceedings,” he said and added that the CBI and ED are still hounding the family of Chidambaram.

“This is despite the fact that the original FIR made no mention of any family member of Chidambaram as also the fact that charge sheet and proceedings have been quashed by the special judge.
