Air passengers have been demanding extension of MMTS (local train) service to the airport from Umdanagar. But the airport firm GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited reportedly is not showing interest in this project.

The Union Government has now recognised the long-felt demand of passengers and is planning to hold a meeting with stakeholders to sort this issue out.

Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, who reviewed a few challenges the Railways faced in furthering several projects here on Monday, said he would soon have meetings with the Union Ministers of Civil Aviation, Urban Development and Home Minister to discuss the knotty issues.

On the top of the agenda is the plan to link Umdanagar with the Shamshabad airport in the next phase of MMTS. The multi-modal transport system, a joint programme with the State Government and the South Central Railway, is aimed at easing the road traffic.

The 3-km stretch between Umdanagar and the airport would give the passengers and their relatives a direct connectivity to the airport from various parts of the city. The airport firm, however, reportedly didn’t like the idea.

“I will take up the issue with the Civil Aviation, Urban Development and Home Ministries along with GMR Management and sort out the issue,” Dattatreya told reporters after the review meeting.

If it is resolved, the project would be completed by December 2017.
