The Opposition attacked the Centre’s draft education policy on Thursday stating that it provides a ready recipe for centralisation, commercialisation and communalisation of education.
Initiating a short duration discussion on the policy, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said the document, if implemented, will take away the right of about 80 crore people to education. He urged the Centre to emulate developed nations and universalise public education.
He alleged that a portion of the policy was copied from an RSS document on education. “In this policy, study of history is replaced by mythology and study of philosophy is replaced by theology,” Yechury said.
Citing the suicide of Hyderabad University student Rohith Vemula and issues in various other education institutes, Yechury said the whole structure of education was being revamped to centralise it.
He said the Centre was restricting education to the affluent, as was done by the Brahminical system.
Former HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said the draft does not address the issues of access, quality and equity in education.
They’re only inputs: CentreHRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said the draft was not even discussed by the Union Cabinet. “These are all just inputs...We made it available to you even before it was discussed in Cabinet,” Javadekar said.
