An education institution in Mangaluru taluk is planning to celebrate its centenary year by installing rooftop solar panels in its campus with the aim to become self-sufficient in energy consumption.

The Surathkal-based Hindu Vidyadayini Sangha, which operates various schools, high school and colleges, has installed a 25-kW rooftop solar power generation system at its campus in Surathkal of Mangaluru taluk.

Power generation

Harish Pejavar, general secretary of the Vidyadayini centenary celebration committee, told Business Line that sangha has set up the solar power generation system on an area of 2,500 sq ft on the campus.

Around 100 units of power, which is being generated from this system in a day, is used by the higher primary school, English medium school and high school in the Surathkal campus.

Stating that the solar energy thus generated helps in meeting the requirements of these three schools, he said the electricity generated during the holidays will be supplied to the power grid of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) Ltd.

The project is being funded by the Mangaluru-based Karnataka Bank Ltd under its corporate social responsibility, he said.

Inauguration

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank Ltd, will inaugurate the solar power system on November 29, he said.

Rooftop solar power generation system is one of the seven projects planned for the centenary year celebration, he said.

Apart from these schools, Hindu Vidyadayini Sangha operates pre-university and degree colleges also. The sangha has postgraduate centres for Commerce and Chemistry also.

The sangha came into existence with Idya Vidyadayini Primary School on November 30, 1916.
