The Government of Andhra Pradesh has issued a GO on Thursday authorising the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation Limited (APMDC) to take up bauxite mining in 1212 hectares of forest land in Chintapalli and Jerrila reserve forest of Narsipatnam forest division in Visakhapatnam district.
A controversy has been raging over the issue for a long time, with tribals in the area, the political parties and environmental activists opposing bauxite mining. The APMDC will mine the bauxite and provide the ore to Anrak which has set up a refinery in Visakhapatnam district at Makavaripalem near Narsipatnam in Visakhapatnam district. Another refinery of the Jindal group is coming up in Vizianagaram district.
The MoUs for both the refineries were signed when the Congress Government was in power and at that time all the opposition parties, including Telugu Desam, opposed the move. Subsequently, after coming to power in 2014, the Telugu Desam seems to have altered its stance on the issue.
