The BJP falling short of its 150 Assembly seats target in Gujarat has given the Congress in Karnataka some level of confidence.

The Congress, which has begun it own yatra and pre-poll campaign in the State, sees an opportunity to overcome its issues and defeat a weakened Opposition.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, who is currently touring the State preparing the Congress for the Assembly elections, reacted to the Gujarat poll results: “Gujarat Assembly election’s verdict will have no impact on Karnataka.

“Karnataka is purely a secular State... the political stunts of Modi and Amit Shah will not have an effect here.”

Siddaramaiah said he is confident the Congress will get a comfortable majority on its own in the Assembly elections in Karnataka, giving new Congress President Rahul Gandhi a fine gift.

However, Karnataka BJP President BS Yeddyurappa had a different take. “Today’s win will have a positive and huge impact on the next election in Karnataka, and pave way for the BJP to realise its long-cherished goal of making the country free from the Congress. The BJP’s aim to win 150 out of 224 Assembly seats will definitely be realised.”
