Industries in Mangaluru can heave a sigh of relief as the Dakshina Kannada district administration has decided to lift the suspension of water supply to them.
The district administration had stopped supply of water to industries on April 26 following acute water scarcity in the district. In an order issued on May 26, the district administration has withdrawn the decision.
The order said that some places in the district have been witnessing pre-monsoon showers for the past few days and the inflow of water to the Nethravathi’s dams has increased to some extent. Forecasts by Meteorological Department indicate monsoon rainfall in the first week of June.
It noted that the ban on water supply had affected the production of urea at Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) Ltd, the lone urea-manufacturing unit in the State. MCF stopped the production of urea on May 7.
Sources at MCF told Business Line that the company is making arrangements for resuming operations at the plant. It will take at least a week to resume operations, they said.
