Two ships were commissioned here on Wednesday, one for the Eastern Naval Command of the Navy and the other for the Indian Coast Guard.

Fast patrol vessel ICGS Gaidinliu, named after Naga freedom-fighter and leader Rani Gaidinliu, was commissioned by Director-General Rajendra Singh of the Coast Guard. He said the vessel would be used for search and rescue operations, surveillance at sea, coastal patrol and anti-smuggling operations, besides protection of merchant navy vessels and fishermen.

Rear-Admiral (retd) L.V Sarat Babu, Chairman and Managing Director of Hindusthan Shipyard Ltd (HSL), which built the vessel, said it was the fourth of five such vessels being built by HSL for the Coast Guard.

Commandant Ramesh Vasant will command the vessel, to be stationed at Krishnapatnam port.

INS Tihayu, a fast attack craft, was commissioned by Vice-Admiral HCS Bisht, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC). The ship was built by the Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd.

Named after one of the Nicobar islands, the Tihayu is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 35 knots. Commander Ajay Kashov will command the ship, which will be manned by four officers and 41 crew members.
