The detailed project reports for Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam metro were submitted by metro expert and consultant Sreedharan here on Saturday to Chief Minister N. Chandra Babu Naidu in the presence of Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Later, the Union Minister and the Chief Minister jointly addressed a press meet. The Vijayawada metro, which was initially considered unviable by the Union Government but subsequently approved, would cover 26 km and cost Rs 6,769 crore and the Vizag metro would cover 42 km costing Rs 12,727 crore.

The Chief Minister said the Vijayawada metro had been awarded to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and efforts would be made to complete both the metros by the end of 2018. "The Vijayawada metro would be completed but efforts would be made to complete at least the first phase of Vizag metro by then," he said.

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said it was not found feasible to include Guntur in the Vijayawada metro, but high speed trains would be introduced between Vijayawada and Guntur.

In response to a question, he said that though Vijayawada was not included in the first list of smart cities due importance would be given for the development of the capital region consisting of Amaravati, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali and Mangalagiri.
