The country’s ‘first’ Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) for Skilling in Smart Cities was opened here on Monday in collaboration with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan.
The NDMC-PMKK Centre for Skilling in Smart Cities, housed in a heritage building, can train 4,000 youths annually, an official release said. Catering to healthcare and solar energy sectors, the centre will be managed by Orion Edutech, a National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC)-affiliated training partner. A solar lab, powered by Schneider Electric, was also inaugurated on the occasion.
At the event, Pradhan appealed to the Home Minister to sanction land with NDMC, which comes under the Home Ministry, for building a hostel to accommodate 1,000 youth undergoing skill training. He said this would help candidates who come to Delhi for training under the PMKVY, adding that his Ministry would build the hostel in collaboration with NDMC.
In his address, Rajnath Singh said that by 2030, India would be among the top three economies in the world, owing to the efforts made by the government and skill development initiatives, adding that these skill centres would aspire youth to take up vocational training to make them self-reliant.
The centre for skilling in ‘smart cities’ will be set up by NSDC, a public-private partnership, in collaboration with New Delhi Municipal Council Smart City Ltd, to provide skill training for unemployed youth through its short-term training module and contribute to the capacity building of municipal employees through Recognition of Prior Learning programme, the release added.
