The Phase 1 of SmartCity Kochi, including a 6.5 lakh sq ft IT tower, was inaugurated on Saturday at a function attended by dignitaries from the UAE and Kerala. Work on the Phase II was also launched simultaneously.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on the occasion that the days of sending youths from Kerala for jobs abroad and other parts of the country are over. Now the world will come to Kerala, he said.

‘Boon for youth’

“We have to use the skills of our youth for the development of this State,” he said.

“SmartCity Kochi is not just an IT project; it’s a symbol of the traditional relationship between the UAE and Kerala. On completion, the project will be the largest IT hub in the country,” the Chief Minister added.

Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, UAE, and Chairman of Dubai Holding, said SmartCity Kochi was a milestone project for the UAE and Dubai Holdings. It is a great leap in the relationship between Kerala and the UAE. Developments in the IT sector will enhance the growth in the healthcare, education and other sectors, he added.

Rajiv Prathap Rudy, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said that with the commissioning of the SmartCity, Kerala which has been the skill capital for the world would now excel in the IT sector as well.
