Attacking Narendra Modi, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi said instead of addressing the issues of peasants and workers, the Prime Minister was trying to divide the country.

Concluding his Maha Yatra — from Deoria in eastern Uttar Pradesh to Delhi — on Thursday, the Amethi MP said it was not acceptable that even though crores of youth remained unemployed, the Centre was not taking any steps to provide them jobs. “Modi’s work includes waving farmers’ loans, providing employment and ensuring proper wages to workers. Instead, he is hiding behind the blood of martyred soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir. He is trading their blood. This is completely wrong,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi said Modi did not fulfil any of his electoral promises. “He talked about giving ₹15 lakh to every Indian; he said he will ensure better minimum support price for farm produce; he said he will implement MS Swaminathan’s report on the farm sector; [he said he would] offer two crore jobs every year; he promised that he will clean India; he said he will make in India; he said he will connect India…But he did nothing,” Rahul Gandhi said, and added: “Instead, he did one thing. He made one Hindustani fight the other. He is trying to divide the country. Be it the Jats of Haryana, Patidars of Gujarat or people of Assam, everyone is complaining against him,” the Nehru-Gandhi scion added.

He alleged that Modi did not believe in giving justice to people. “Congress gave justice to people. We respected the balance of goddess justice. Modi does not respect this balance. He has thrown it away,” he said.

Farmer distress Rahul Gandhi said during his Uttar Pradesh rally, the people of the State taught him a lot on agriculture and employment. “No one knows better than them about such issues. But farmers are in distress. They are not getting good prices for their produces. One farmer told me that he is worried about his future. He told me that my visit gave him confidence, but said sometimes he feels like committing suicide while thinking about his future,” the Amethi MP added.

He reiterated his demand for farm loan waivers and cutting the power bill of farmers by half. The demand letters signed by farmers during the Mahayatra will be submitted to the Centre.
