With a view to reviving and sustaining traditional weaving practices, Microsoft India has opened a digital empowerment centre at Pochampally, known for its trademark handlooms. Besides imparting digital literacy to weavers, the centre will help them prepare newer designs.
The centre, inaugurated by Telangana IT and Industry Minister KT Rama Rao at the textile park on Saturday, will train weavers to use design software and enable them to have an online sales presence.
After inaugurating the centre, the minister said it would help the weavers in enhancing their offerings and in reaching out to more customers through e-commerce. He said the government would evolve a mechanism for buyback agreements that would help them receive assured incomes.
“Weavers from here and nearby clusters can start using technology to expand their design knowledge and market reach. This centre will teach the weavers in using software to create new designs, to set up e-markets, and to preserve their craft,” a Microsoft statement said.
