There’s is no imminent announcement of poll dates, but political parties in Karnataka have gotten into campaign mode for the 2018 Assembly elections.
The BJP, the main opposition party in the State, was the first off the block, launching a ‘pre-election campaign’ here with its Parivarthana Yatra on November 2.
The 75-day yatra, spearheaded by the party’s State unit president BS Yeddyurappa, was flagged off by BJP president Amit Shah. It will touch all the 224 Assembly constituencies, with public rallies en route.
Not to be outdone, Janata Dal Secular (JDS), another opposition party, has launched a Kumaraparva Yatra, led by the party’s State president HD Kumaraswamy. The yatra started at Chamundeshwari constituency in Mysuru district, with Kumaraswamy opting for village stays where possible. This is seen to have helped him gain traction in areas where his party has no base.
The ruling Congress is gearing up for polls as well, with its ‘Mane Manege Congress’. The initiative, led by KC Venugopal, AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka, aims to energise the party’s booth-level committees and highlight the achievements of the State government.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is rolling up his sleeves as well, embarking on a month-long tour of the State from December 13. He is expected to launch various projects and schemes in all the 30 districts.
The Opposition is riled by the CM’s move, accusing him of using the State exchequer to sponsor his political tour.
