At least six persons have been arrested in connection with the death of the CEO of the Northbrook Jute Mill at Hooghly.
The mill is located some 50-odd kilometres away from Kolkata.
According to a statement by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, instructions have been given to the police to “book the accused” and six people have so far been arrested in this connection.
The CM’s statement was read out to the media by the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Partha Chatterjee.
CEO of Northbrook Jute Mill HK Maheshwari was beaten to death allegedly by workers on Sunday. It is said that workers turned violent following differences arising out of wage negotiations and change in shift timings.
Two other senior officials of the mill were also injured in the incident.
Meanwhile, condemning the incident, Viresh Oberoi, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Eastern Region said: “At a time when we have been witnessing improvement in the industrial climate, such an incident is indeed very unfortunate and we hope that whosoever responsible should be brought to books to send out a strong message.”
