The procurement price of LED bulbs under the Domestic Efficient Lighting Prorgramme has fallen to ₹ 64.41 (exclusive of taxes), making the product even more affordable. The latest round of procurement was for the state of Maharashtra.

The latest drop was a 10 per cent decline over ₹ 73 that was achieved in the previous round of procurement. Through Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), the government has been bulk procuring LED bulbs and distributing them to households with electricity connections. The programme has made the bulbs affordable and under the scheme bringing down prices from ₹ 310 a bulb in February 2014 to now ₹ 64.41 bulb.

While the prices of the bulbs have dropped, the efficiency has increased 20 per cent to 9W, an official statement said.

Under the DELP scheme, EESL has so far distributed 5.1 crore LED bulbs. According to official estimates, the estimated daily energy savings due to this is 1.8 crore units of electricity, peak demand of electricity has reduced by 1,612 MW, daily reduction in bills of consumers is estimated to be ₹ 7.09 crore and estimated reduction in daily in greenhouse gas emissions is 14,750 tonne of carbon-dioxide.

“The target of the programme is to replace all the 77 crore incandescent bulbs sold in India by LEDs. This will result in reduction of 20,000 MW load, energy savings of 100 billion units and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions savings of 80 million tonne every year. The annual saving in electricity bills of consumers will be ₹ 40,000 crore, considering average tariff of ₹ 4 per unit,” the statement added.
