A public hearing will be held here on October 31 by the AP Pollution Control Board on the proposed expansion of two oil berths of Visakhapatnam Port Trust at a cost of ₹193.31 crore.
The port proposes to enhance cargo-handling (petroleum, oils and lubricants including POL products) from 3.28 million tonne to 9.81 million tonne by modernising and creating new facilities for oil refinery-I and II berths.
Copies of the summary of draft environmental impact assessment of the proposed project is available at the district collector’s office, the offices of GVMC Commissioner, VUDA, Zilla Parishad and AP Pollution Control Board. The hearing will be held in the port area.
The board of Visakhapatnam port has approved the project for which the IIT-Chennai has conducted a study.
Timeline According to sources, the project is to be completed in three years so as to handle three panamax vessels simultaneously.
The port is required to handle more petroleum products in future with the Visakha refinery of the HPCL here launching work on capacity doubling project at a cost of ₹20,928 crore.
India’s first underground rock cavern built by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd here at a cost of ₹1,178 crore to supply crude in case of an emergency has a capacity to store 1.33 million tonne. It has two chambers, the smallest chamber with a capacity of 0.33 million tonne belongs to the HPCL.
