Cutting across party lines, members united in Rajya Sabha today to seek stringent punishment for perpetrators of acid attacks in the wake of rising incidents in the country, saying the incidents inflict undescribable pain on the body and minds of the victims.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, K C Tyagi (JD-U) said the incidents of acid attacks have become rampant and scores of women were being forced to live with distorted faces, bodies and minds after such horrendous acts.

“While perpetrators of such crimes manage to go scot-free, the victim’s psyche is perforated for life besides face and body and the scar remains,” he said, demanding framing of stringent laws to deal with such perpetrators.

Persons who throw acid on girls for failure in a love affair or other reasons are of pervert minds and managed to escape due to weak laws, Tyagi said.

“Even after the Supreme Court made it a non-bailable offence for such offenders, the accused continue to escape,” he said seeking formation of a Commission for Rehabilitation of such girls.

Even Prime Minister and Home Minister have expressed concern over such incidents, he said and demanded compensation of Rs 10-15 lakh each for such victims. He said recently several victims had staged a dharna here to seek justice.

Also, he demanded fast-tracking of such cases to ensure expeditious delivery of justice to the victims.

Jaya Bachchan (SP) said the government should not only express concern but do something also.

The entire House associated with the demand, with Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi saying “the issue is serious and the entire House is concerned about it. We will apprise the government about it“.
