At a time when economic slowdown and dwindling jobs have become major concerns, there was an increase in the number of recruiters visiting the campus of BITS — Pilani this year.
For the first time, 119 companies participated in the campus recruitment programme at the main campus of BITS at Pilani. “The recruiter participation was 41 per cent higher than the previous year,” Balasubramanian Gurumurthy, Chief Placements Officer, BITS — Pilani told Business Line here.
About 300 odd students from the bachelor’s degree were recruited and the placement ratio was over 90 per cent of the total students, he added.
In addition to big names such as TCS, Texas Instruments, Oracle, Cisco Systems, Cognizant, Ultratech, JP Morgan IB, EA Games, Capital IQ, CEAT and Walmart, some start-up companies also hired students.
Similar trendIT and ITeS firms hired in large numbers while there was equal interest from companies engaged in other sectors, he said adding that the placements programme has almost ended.
A similar trend was also noticed in other campuses at Hyderabad and Goa. While 43 companies including all majors from across the industry visited the Hyderabad campus last year, the number had gone up to 58 this year. In addition, eight start-up companies also hired students.
According to VS Rao, Director, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad, a centralised placement model, as compared to the decentralised model in the previous years, had led to an over all increase in campus placements.
For the year 2013-14, the institute had reached out to more than 2,000 recruiters for campus hiring as compared to around 1,200 in the previous years.
