The Ministry of Human Resource Development on Monday issued an official statement where it clarified that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has not directed any school to remain open on December 25 and all schools will follow their vacation schedule.

“The proposed instructions of the CBSE are to conduct an online essay competition on December 24 and 25, which is completely voluntary… students if so desire can participate from their homes or any other place that offers online access,” it said, adding that no official of CBSE is required to come to office for the online essay competition.

As far as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) are concerned, the Ministry said that the vacation patterns of these residential schools depend on climatic conditions. “The 25th of December will be celebrated in those schools which do not have any winter break. In such schools, since it is a public holiday on December 25, the schools will also remain closed. As a residential school, however, the school functions as children continue to remain there and these children will have the opportunity to participate in the essay competition, if they so wish,” the statement clarified.

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti has clarified that no other activities for this competition are being held. Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas, which will also remain closed, can participate voluntarily.

A circular issued by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti dated December 10 had stated that the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and also Madan Mohan Malviya will be celebrated as ‘Good Governance Day’ on December 25.

“It is decided to have the following activities in JNVs: declamation contest, quiz competitions, screening of documentaries and films on best practices in good governance,” the circular said, adding that CBSE will also be organising competitions on December 24 and 25 which would be open to students who submit entries in the form of essays/one act plays with online, offline modes of submission.

The circular also requested to ‘ensure that Good Governance Day is celebrated in all JNVs under your region’ and a consolidated report specifying activities carried out in all JNVs is to be submitted by email along with photos/videos to Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti office on December 25.
