The British Medical Journal (BMJ) will launch its India Web site next month in Mumbai. This is its first country-specific Web site outside the United Kingdom.

The launch of the Web site is in response to the Planning Commission’s announcement of expansion of healthcare throughout India in its 12th Five-Year Plan, to meet the long-term objective of universal health coverage, a note from the British Deputy High Commission said.

BMJ.com/India will have content such as medical news, comment, research and education that will be directly relevant to doctors practising in India.

BMJ is published by BMJ Publishing Group Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Medical Association. It is an international peer reviewed medical journal and a fully “online first” publication.

The print edition of BMJ has been published without interruption since 1840, when it began as the  Provincial Medical and Surgical Journal . Its weekly circulation now totals about 122,000 copies. International editions reach another 55,000 readers.

Fiona Godlee, BMJ’s Editor-in-Chief, Anita Jain, India Editor of BMJ, and Tim Brooks, CEO of BMJ Group, will be in Mumbai for the launch, which will be attended by the British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India Peter Beckingham.
