Regular, moderate exercise such as jogging, swimming, aerobics and cycling can slow down the advance of arthritis, according to a leading German sports doctor and professor, Klaus Boes.

He recommends arthritis patients engage in between 30 and 40 minutes of light exercise twice a week.

Walking, stretching and weight lifting are especially good for combating arthritis. Boes advises sufferers against sports like tennis, volleyball, football or handball, as they are less beneficial.

Arthritis patients tend to get less exercise due to pain. That pattern grows as pain increases. Light exercise can reduce the pain, because it promotes production of fluid in the joints.
