The second phase of Tata Medical Center in the satellite township of Rajarhat, along the eastern fringes of the city, is likely to be operational in another two years.

Coming up at a cost of ₹200 crore, work on the project is expected to begin “shortly”, according to VR Ramanan, Deputy Director-Medical, Tata Medical Center.

The second unit will come up within the existing 14 acre campus at Rajarhat. Tata Medical Center is a dedicated facility for cancer patients.

“We are looking for donations to begin work on the second phase. Work will begin shortly. Details of the contractor are being worked out,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by Tata Medical Center. So far IOC Ltd has agreed to provide a donation of ₹66 crore for the second phase.

According him, work on the second phase was taken up after there was an increased in-flow of patients for the first unit. The second phase will add 250 new beds.

The existing facility (first unit), built at ₹340 crore has around 165 beds. State Bank of India, meanwhile, made a donation of ₹6 crore towards the procurement and installation of a “Positron Emission Tomography-CT Scan” machine mainly used for cancer detection.
