The Singareni Collieries Co Ltd has approved the expansion of the 1,200 MW coal fired thermal power plant, by addition of another unit of 800 MW.

The Board of Directors of the State-owned coal mining company Singareni Collieries, which met here chaired by the Chairman and Managing Director, N Sridhar, approved the expansion plan, while also awarding the contract for development of the project to BHEL.

The 1,200 MW thermal power plant, located at Jaipur in Mancherial district of Telangana State, was completed after the new State was formed. It has been functioning at high plant load factor and has been playing a major role in energy security of the newly carved out State.

In tune with the State Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's plan to provide energy for all, the State-owned generation company TS Genco and the Sinagreni Collieries have taken up major expansion projects.

This project contract, which entails setting up of an 800 MW super critical thermal power plant, has been awarded to BHEL. The Rs 5,817-crore order is for the development of the project as an EPC contract covering boiler, generator and turbine (BTG) package.

BHEL was also the contractor for the two units of 600 MW each. It has now been awarded the contract by the State Government on nomination basis, as it is a State-owned enterprise.

The Chief Minister had earlier decided that the power plants would be executed by BHEL. This would augur well for both the State-owned entities but also keep leaders away from making allegations against the award of the contracts.

Recently, the State Government approved the detailed project report prepared by the company. Following this development, expansion is now being undertaken.

The State had also struck a deal with State-owned lenders Power Finance Corporation ans Rural Electrification Corporation for funding various power projects being taken up.
