Delivery of import containers at Chennai port was completely stopped from last night till this afternoon following search by various intelligence agencies on a tip-off that large consignments of fake Indian currency notes have come in containers from Bangladesh and West Asia.
Even movement of export boxes to the port was stopped during the search operation, said sources.
Complete stoppage, even though temporarily, of delivery of import boxes has never happened at the port. It is quite unusual, said trade sources.
Since this afternoon movement of containers in and out of the port has commenced, according to Chennai Port Trust chairman P Raveendran. No other information is available on the search operations, he told BusinessLine.
In a related development, Chennai Customs has asked all container freight stations to remain open on Sunday and its officers to be present.
All CFSs should have sufficient manpower and required equipment operators for carrying out examinations of containers, says a Customs communication to the CFSs.
Sunday is a holiday for CFSs. “We don’t know whether it is in continuation of the search operations at Chennai port or just examination of the facility,” said an official of a CFS.
