A few hundred metres away, a different kind of world contest that had been happening at the Convention Centre for the last two weeks came to an end on Sunday evening, with American women winning the crown.
The 41st World Bridge Team Championships, the pinnacle of achievement in duplicate bridge held every odd year, the championships comprise three main and independent contests — the Bermuda Bowl (trophy for the open teams), Venice Cup (for the women’s teams) and d’Orsi Trophy for seniors.

A total of 66 teams from 31 nations — selected on the basis of trials in designated zones — vied for the three trophies.
Watching the American women’s team clinch the Venice Cup winning a closely (229 versus 220 Victory Points) contested match with England, diminished the sense of mortification the Indian women’s team felt at the sound drubbing it received from both of them in the Round Robin last week.
First opponent
Our very first opponent was England, closely followed by USA2 and now we know that we had started with the finalists!
The 2013 Bermuda Bowl was taken by Italy that beat Monaco through a decisive 210 versus 126 VPs contest, while Germany lifted the d’Orsi trophy.
