The MRF Pace Foundation has announced a change of guard. Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath will take over from the legendary Dennis Lillee as Director of the training academy.
Set up in 1987, the MRF Pace Foundation has produced several young pace bowlers in the country; many of them have played for the national team. The foundation also has agreements with Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies and England to train talent. Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Brett Lee, Chaminda Vaas and Irfan Pathan have trained under Lillee. In fact, McGrath, the highest wicket taker among fast bowlers, too, is a product of MRF Foundation.
After a 25-year stint, Lillee has vacated the post to pursue other interests, including business and fishing. McGrath will start his new assignment next year, after a five-year hiatus from international cricket.
The MRF Pace Foundation functions from the MCC School campus in Chennai. It is a brainchild of the late Ravi Mammen, brother of K. M. Mammen, the Chairman and Managing Director of MRF.
The coaching school stemmed out of the absence of a quality pace bowling attack in the country. Over the years, the foundation has played host to legendary cricketers such as Jeff Thomson, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Joel Garner and Rodney Marsh.
Apart from cricket, MRF is also keenly associated with motor sports in the country.
