The Karnataka Government will start a sports injury centre in Bengaluru soon.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Tuesday, UT Khader, Karnataka Health Minister, said the government had set in motion plans for setting up a sports injury centre at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic in Bengaluru, and it would be launched soon.
As of now, Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi has such a facility. He claimed that Bengaluru would be the second centre to have such a sports injury centre.
Treatment to sportspersons would be free at the centre. However, they would be charged a minimal cost in the case of implants, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Madan Mohan Ballal, Assistant Professor at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic and a sports injury specialist, said most sportspersons who suffer injuries do not require surgeries. The centre would take care of the problems related to sportspersons, he said.
A modular ward is being set up at the institute under the guidance of BG Tilak, the institute director, he said.
