With India only winning two medals at the recently concluded Rio Olympics and several near-perfect performances, Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to have taken it on himself to improve India’s sports performance for the future.

The Prime Minister has decided to set up a task force to prepare an action plan for the next three Olympics till 2028.

This task force will prepare the overall strategy for sports facilities, training, selection procedure, scouting talent and related matters, an official statement said.

This will be done to make a comprehensive action plan for effective participation of sportsperson, keeping in mind Olympics 2020, 2024 and 2028.

The task force will comprise in-house as well as external experts. The task force is expected to be set up in the next few days, the official statement added. This decision was taken on Friday.

The Indian contingent and officials were embroiled in several controversies during the Rio Olympics. While Indian officials’, accompanying the Indian contingent, behaviour came into question, India’s wrestler Narsingh Yadav was handed over a four-year ban after being hit by a doping scandal.
