West Bengal Advocate General Anindya Mitra resigned from the post on Friday. Mitra has been replaced by Bimal Chatterjee.

According to the State Law Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, Mitra submitted his resignation on Friday itself.

A copy of the AG’s resignation letter was sent to the Chief Minister and it was accepted, Bhattacharya told reporters at Writers’ Buildings (State Secretariat). A copy of Mitra’s resignation letter will also be forwarded to Governor M.K. Narayanan.

“As per instructions of the CM, Bimal Chatterjee has been appointed as the new Advocate General,” she said.

Asked for why Mitra had resigned, he said the State Government was not aware of it.

Bhattacharya also replied in the negative when asked if there were any truth to rumours of the State Government not cooperating with Anindya Mitra in dealing with major cases.
