Renowned litterateur and Sahitya Akademi President, Sunil Gangopadhyay, died in a massive heart attack at his South Kolkata residence in the wee hours of Tuesday. He was 78 and survived by his wife and son.
Well-known for his versatile literary acumen, Gangopadhyay authored more than 200 books.
He penned short stories, travelogues, children’s fiction and novels. While Nikhilesh and Neera series of poems were quite popular, novels like Aranyer Dinratri, Sei Samay and Kakababu series were regarded among the best works of contemporary Bengali literature.
Having started off as the founder editor of a seminal poetry magazine, Krittibas , he had regularly contributed in many leading Bengali magazines and Pujobarshiki (annual magazines published ahead of Durga Puja).
His awards include Sahitya Akademi Award (1985), Ananda Puraskar (1989). He was elected as the President of the Sahitya Akademi on February 20, 2008.
