The Thiruvananthapuram police have registered a case over an alleged threat to harm Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘if he were to land in Kerala’.
This comes in the context of reports of the Prime Minister being invited to the State to visit the hill shrine of Sabarimala next month.
A letter containing the threat and attributed to the Mannar unit (Alappuzha district) of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) had landed at the State Committee office of the Bharatiya Janatha Party here.
VV Rajesh, spokesman of the party, filed a complaint in this regard to the police, based on which they are investigating the case.
The letter allegedly features a photo of the Prime Minister juxtaposed against that of British aid worker David Haines, who was beheaded by ISIS extremists of Iraq-Syria.
SDPI is the political front of the Popular Front, and has a presence in 16 States, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal.
It has had a history of being involved in clashes with the cadres of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Kerala.
