The UK India Business Council (India) and the Lavasa Corporation Ltd have signed an MoU to kick off a pilot in behavioural training in Lavasa, a planned hill city in Maharashtra.

The objective of the MoU, signed in the presence of Matthew Hancock, UK Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise, is to upskill workforces in the construction and security sectors and provide them with better employment opportunities. UKIBC will bring together a consortia of skills providers with diverse operational skills, and serve as the secretariat for the pilot.

With its young population and growing economy, India needs to upskill its workforce. Targets include the creation of 40 million graduate places by 2020 and the building of 11,000 new schools.

Richard Heald, CEO, UKIBC said, “I believe the UK can offer innovative skills delivery and expertise in setting standards, while learning from the strengths of Indian businesses in large-scale training. UK-India partnerships between training institutions are already increasing, but there is scope for much more.”

“Lavasa Corporation is set to welcome many new businesses in addition to the existing hospitality, education, travel and leisure businesses. The tie-up with UKIBC to up-skill the workforce will help provide potential businesses moving into the hill city. Many people from the local community currently working at Lavasa will also benefit as the training will enhance their skills and enable them to seek better employment opportunities,” said Nathan Andrews, President, Lavasa Corporation Ltd.
