Labour trouble seems to be brewing in Japanese firm Aisin Automative Ltd’s plant in IMT, Rohtak, which employs about 800 workers, including women, with unions alleging lathi-charge, arrest and detention of over 400 area workers, including 35 women, by the Haryana police on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) alleged the incident took place during a solidarity march with protesting Aisin workers have been sitting on dharna following the termination of 20 workers.

“Aisin workers took initiative to form a trade union and submitted application in the state labour department. But the labour department of the BJP-led government in Haryana rejected the application without stating any reason and almost simultaneously, on May 3, 2017, the management of AISIN Automotive terminated the service of the 20 leading workers, including four women, without notice and showing any reason,” said the statement issued by Tapan Sen, General Secretary, CITU.

Sen, a Rajya Sabha MP, alleged that following the protests, the rest 700 Aisin workers were also sent out of the factory, and were “directed” to join work only after giving a written undertaking not to join any union”.

It was in protest against this that the solidarity march took place on May 31, Sen said, alleging that many workers had been injured in the lathi-charge. CITU called for the immediate release of all workers and bilateral talks to sort out issues raised by workers.
