How does one tackle a crisis that looks insurmountable?

Never lose heart, says former Test cricketer Rahul Dravid.

Considered ‘The Wall’ of Indian cricket, Dravid gave a tip or two to young techies at an event held here on how to cope with adversity. He cited the example of the famed Test match with Australia 15 years ago at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. “When the going gets tough, it’s important to slow down, relax and remain calm for a while. Take one thing at a time and remain focussed,” he suggested.

As wickets fell like nine pins in that match, VVS Laxman and Dravid stood like a rock and built an innings that’s regarded as one of the best in cricketing history. “As wickets fell, we had decided to change the game and tame the Australians. We tackled each ball with utmost care. The rest, you all know, is history,” said Dravid. At a session on ‘Excellence in Adversity’ organised at Tanla Solutions, General VP Malik spoke on his experiences from the Kargil war and Mark Inglis on his climbing Mount Everest with his prosthetic limbs.

“When I look at that picture, I don’t see a double amputee. I see a guy who won’t get frostbite on his legs,” he said, pointing at a picture of him climbing the mountain.
