Tata Sons are not averse to investing in Bengal. But investments will come only when the opportunity arises.
According to , Cyrus P Mistry, Group Chairman, Tata Sons, the group had an apolitical stance on business and West Bengal “holds a special place”.
“From our perspective in the Tata Group we are clearly apolitical. We don’t partake in politics. For us, West Bengal has a special part in our heart and in our history. And for us, we will always look at West Bengal as a place to grow,” he said in response to a shareholder query at the 53rd AGM of Tata Global Beverages (TGB), here, on Tuesday.
He, however, added that investments will come only when the Group sees opportunities.
“I think the opportunities will have to show themselves. When the opportunities do show themselves, irrespective of the political environment we will make the decision to invest,” he added.
Relations between the Tata Group and the Trinamool Congress – now in power in West Bengal – are said to have gone downhill after Tata Motors shifted its small car project from Singur (in West Bengal) to Sanand in Gujarat in 2008 following intense opposition. The Trinamool Congress, then the principal opposition party in the State, had spearheaded an anti-land acquisition movement.
