NGO representatives, industry leaders, academicians, government administrators, and residents from 21-odd villages of Kanchipuram district all gathered under one roof; no, not for a political rally or a CSR initiative of an MNC, but for the annual affair of an Indian business school.

The second annual Karma Yoga convention at the Chennai-based Great Lakes Institute of Management was bigger and better this year with active participation from the multiple stakeholders of society.

The convention served as a platform where participating villagers around the GLIM campus shared and discussed ideas with people who had common interests. These villagers were able to directly reach out to prospective collaborators and support groups during the event.

A workshop for self-help groups on developing an entrepreneurial aptitude was also hosted during the convention to help the villagers set-up viable and small businesses for themselves. The event aimed at linking prospective collaborators directly with the villagers.

With a focus on agriculture, education and health, the convention focussed on three primary issues: ‘How to turn agriculture into a more viable profession?’; making education fun and enjoyable for children; and access to both conventional as well as alternative medicine.

The discussion on the issues took place among the leaders and the villagers.

“It is not just students who are groomed to be real-time problem solvers through this event, but the villagers also who will benefit from the power of leadership that is passed on to them,” said Bala V. Balachandran, the Founding Dean of Great Lakes Institute of Management. “Karma-Yoga insists that excelling with leadership qualities and transforming followers are not only required in a business environment, but also in the society one lives in.”

Karma-Yoga is Great Lakes’ flagship Leadership Experiential Programme, designed for students to connect with ground realities and experientially learn transformational leadership. The programme also inducts students into social responsibility early in their careers.
