On the day he started his 50th year in Larsen & Toubro, group executive chairman A.M. Naik was addressing the convocation of the second batch of students of the Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli, held on March 15.

Naik, who narrated the story of his long career in the engineering and construction major, exhorted the students never to lose their sense of values, commitment and integrity. “Don’t take short cuts,” he told the students, “if you cannot solve the misery in India, then don’t add to it.”

Referring to the huge mop-up by the IT industry of engineers of all disciplines, Naik, who is Chairman of the board of governors of IIM-A, said he told the director of the institute that in the past 15 years, not a single student from IIM-A had gone to work in heavy industry. “If even the civil engineers are going to IT, then one can’t complain about poor infrastructure,” said Naik. Most B-school graduates either opt for IT or for FMCG marketing companies. “Of course, being a civil engineer means a hard life but you will have the pride of serving the country.”

To encourage more B-schoolers to enter heavy industry, Naik has got IIM-A to start a programme in infrastructure which has around 20 students now to start with.

Earlier, in his address M. Damodaran, Chairman, board of governors of IIM Trichy, in a similar vein, told the students never to forget their ethics. “Tactics and context will change but value systems have to be eternal,” he told the students. Diplomas were awarded to 104 graduating students of the two-year post graduate programme in management.

Several students received awards for their meritorious performance. A gold medal for securing the first rank in the PG programme was bagged by Tina Marshall and the second rank by Navin Kumar L. The HDFC Bank gold medal for academic proficiency in finance and accounting was also awarded to Navin Kumar while the gold medal for marketing was awarded to B. Karthikeyan. The Leela Chandrasekhara Menon award, instituted by M. Damodaran in memory of his mother for the outstanding lady student, went to Sameera Dhavala. The gold medal for best all-round performance in the programme was awarded to Anand Kumaresh.
