IDA to give $ 4 billion

The International Development Association (IDA) is to commit about $4 billion for the development of key social sector programmes in India during the next three years. This was indicated during the preliminary discussions with the World Bank at the India Development Forum known earlier as Aid India Consortium. The Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh, has approved the suggestion of the Bank to rename the Aid India Consortium as the India Development Forum from this year.

Rao arrives in Moscow

The Prime Minister, Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao arrived here on Wednesday on a four-day official visit, which is expected to be a landmark event in the development of bilateral ties with Russia. He was received at the airport by the Russian Premier, Mr. Viktor Chernomyrdin and other top officials. After a review of the ceremonial guard of honour, Mr. Rao met Russian VIPs, officials of the Indian mission here as well as members of the Indian community.

Sugar imports under OGL to continue

The Government on Wednesday said sugar imports under the open general licence will continue and “no decision has been taken to suspend its imports”. Denying newspaper reports that the Centre has decided not to undertake fresh sugar imports after July, an official press note said “the Government is keen to improve availability of sugar for domestic consumption in the coming months and also to bring down its prices”. “The present policy of import of sugar under OGL would continue and no decision has been taken to suspend its imports”, the press note clarified
