New coal mining Act

The Government has decided to introduce competitive bidding for coal mining blocks by putting in place a new Coal and Lignite (Regulation and Development) Act. Earlier the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had recommended the amending of the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act. At present, the draft note has been circulated to the various ministries concerned, namely, power, mining, steel and finance, for their comments. The provisions of the new Act envisage the ushering in of competitive bidding for coal and lignite mining blocks.

Maruti to relaunch 800 model with new engine

MARUTI Udyog Ltd (MUL) is set to relaunch its popular 800 cc car in the third quarter of 1998 with a new, more powerful engine. The new engine would also make the Maruti 800 the first small car in India to have a low pressure fuel injection system for gasoline engines. This fuel injection system replaces the carburetor, like in Daewoo’s Cielo, and also does not require a spark plug. The company has also booked engine beds in testing facilities in Japan for conducting over 1,000 hours of technical and field tests.

Globalstar plans gateways in three metros

Globalstar, the global hand held telephony alliance, is likely to enter into an agreement with Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd to set up three international gateways at Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Globalstar India Satellite Service is awaiting clearance from the DoT and the Foreign Investment Promotion Board to operate in the country. The other players in the global hand held telephone race are the Iridium consortium and ICO-P.
