The next Union Government, whatever its composition may be, would find itself in a spot over the proposed amendments to the country’s patent laws as a group of Parliamentarians, cutting across party lines, have resolved to fight the move tooth and na9il. The options with the next Government would be few as it would have to contend with political opposition on the home front even as it tackles the US, which is stepping up pressure on India over the issue. Interestingly, determination to oppose the TRIPS (Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights) agreement has brought together prominent politicians of various hues like Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi of the BJP, former Prime Minister, Mr. Chandrashekhar, the former Union Minister, Mr. George Fernandes of the Samata Party, Mr. Jaipal Reddy of the Janata Dal, Dr. Ashok Mitra of the CPI (M) and Justice V R. Krishna Iyer.

Centre moves appellate authority

In a surprising development, the Union Industry Ministry has gone to the Appellate Authority for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (AAIFR) to register its dissatisfaction over the revival scheme for the public sector Tyre Corporation of India (TCI), sanctioned by the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR).

Air-India and Indian Airlines are planning to appoint Mckinsey, leading management restructuring consultants, to advise them on hiving off their respective engineering divisions into independent units before merging them into a holding company. Top officials told Business Line that the consultant would be given one month to work out the modalities of this exercise.
