The Department of Science and Technology is planning to give a “marketing thrust” to some projects with a view to developing indigenous technology. The idea was to attract greater industry participation and make a significant part of scientific research being funded by it, user-oriented. So far, the DST had been sponsoring research at universities, scientific institutions and other bodies to generate new technologies in different areas of science. Despite developing a large number of technologies, their absorption by Indian industry had been low.

Eco-friendly manure

A project for making low-cost environment-friendly manure by using earthworm culture has been launched in Andhra Pradesh by the military farm at Bowenpally in the Secunderabad cantonment area. The Vermi compost project, which uses cow dung, cattle food wastes and crop residues, converts them into high-quality manure using earthworm culture. Vermi-compost has received a good response from the local farming community, the agricultural university and the Forest Department.

Sensex hits new high

The Bombay Stock Exchange sensitive index zoomed touching 4588.16 topping the previous all-time high of 4546 of April 1992 in the pre-scam days of big bull Harshad Mehta. All-round buying prevailed with financial institutions (FIs) and foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continuing to be net buyers. Line operations with Calcutta, Delhi and Pune were also believed to be hyperactive despite a cut in trading hours due to disruption of the suburban railway system.
