The Government today announced important changes, including extension of new incentives, in the Export-Import Policy to make exports easier, more attractive and profitable. The Union Commerce Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, said that the thrust henceforth would be on producing for exports rather than exporting whatever is produced. However, such a strategic shift could be sustained if procedural hurdles faced by exporters were eliminated.

FAO studying GATT impact

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will provide technical assessments on the implications of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) for all the developing countries. “The studies, which are already underway, would help developing countries take crucial political decisions before signing the final agreement,” said Dr. Jaques Diouf, Director General of FAO at a press conference, here today.

Telco planning small car

“We are designing a small, completely indigenous car in addition to the Benz,” Mr. Ratan Tata said today referring to Telco’s plans... Mr. Tata said Daimler-Benz AG would only supply the dies and tools for the joint venture product. The Benz, he added, would be manufactured at the Telco factory in Pune. This is the first time that Daimler-Benz will have its manufacturing activity outside Germany. The finished cars, Mr. Tata said, would also be exported to other countries apart from catering to the domestic market.
