This has reference to the views of Raghuram Rajan, Chief Economic Advisor, on fighting inflation, especially food inflation (Business Line, September 26).
One cannot escape reading shades of Marie Antoinette in Rajan’s idea of fighting inflation by increasing production of bread, milk and eggs. How can this solve price rise in foodgrains, vegetables and pulses? Any change in food habits on account of prosperity can be true of only a microscopic minority and food inflation is about items ordinary people consume. How can it be addressed by increasing production of bread, milk and eggs?
PM and ‘aam aadmi’
This has reference to All for the ‘aam aadmi’ (Business Line, September 27). The Congress party’s love for the aam aadmi is quite an old story. During Indira Gandhi’s regime, the movement took the shape of “Garibi Hatao”. Rajiv Gandhi also tried to project a pro-poor image of his Government. Now under Manmohan Singh’s tenure, “aam aadmi” has been at the forefront. It appeared from Manmohan Singh’s televised address to the nation that for a change, the Prime Minister had seized control of the reins of Government. Now, would he be a “Reformist-II” in UPA-II, despite continuing threats to his government?
