“Does KYC really help know your customer?” by Anna Mazzone (March 11) rightly says that the documentation process of KYC compliance is costly as well as time consuming, apart from being complicated. What is baffling is the need for KYC compliance at so many stages. Why should there be separate procedures for KYC by multiple entities? Can’t we have one credible and common KYC Corporation Ltd, a strong Central government undertaking as a one-point KYC compliant authority?

It’s no argument

The 16 questions to the BJP’s prime ministerial aspirant are either speculative or specious or their source has not been mentioned by the questioner (“The Kejriwal juggernaut” by Rasheeda Bhagat, March 11). It’s funny how a leader who as chief minister of Delhi indulged in antics mainly to mislead the public and who resigned over a non- is seen to be prime ministerial material.

He may not be interested in political business as of now, but surely he will support one grouping or another after the polls. Will he find a leader who has ensured cent per cent functional schools, hospitals and satisfaction for farmers?

Well done, FinMin!

While it is true that the cash surplus of public sector undertakings like Coal India and ONGC has been used by the government to pay for subsidies instead of being used for investment in exploration/capital expenditure which would do a lot of good to coal supplies or hydrocarbon exploration / acquisition, it should also be seen holistically (“Filling up the coffers”, March 11). These dividends have helped India retain its credit ratings instead of being ‘junked’. It’s a job well done by the Finance Minister.

DMK’s ploy

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK's) ploy to go it alone and contest a record number of Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu should come as no surprise to those tracking its fortunes of late. The party has been at loggerheads with the Congress on various issues. However, the DMK has put itself in an awkward position by picking the scam tainted duo of A Raja (2G spectrum scam) and Dayanidhi Maran (Aircel Maxis deal) and omitting its Madurai strongman and former Union Minister, M K Alagiri. The DMK's decision to discard 10 of the 18 MPs from the outgoing Lok Sabha to run for the polls again will also be taken with a pinch of salt by many. The party clearly has a fight on its hands.

The hidden half

With reference to “Missing half the demographic dividend” by Jayan Jose Thomas (March 10) the loss occurs when institutions fail to produce manpower and ‘womenpower’ with appropriate knowledge and skill. Most institutions in the private domain attract not so talented students, so the entry itself is flawed. This is the first source of mismatch between work and qualification.

The agriculture sector has seen rapid growth of mechanisation and reduction in manual farm activities. This is the main reason for the displacement of women in this sector.

The larger benefit of economic development has gone to the service sector. Hi-tech industries are in no position to absorb low level skilled and semi-educated manpower. Unless the manufacturing base is widened it is not possible to absorb the mediocre.

A handful of rice

This refers to “How the savings cookie crumbles” by PK Ghosh and others (March 11). The decline in household savings is cause for concern. The main reason for this could be rising prices.

Small savings everyday may make it big for the year. (I have seen my mother putting aside a handful of rice every time she cooks it.)
